The Most Important Question

The people in Thessalonica weren't that different from us today. Their problem was that people were starting to come in and get them off track with teachings that weren't true. The big one was that the day of The Lord had already happened. Some of them were worried that they had missed it! They were too wrapped up in worrying about the end times. Sound familiar? How many books and sermons and discussions do we have about the end times today? I'm not saying we shouldn't discuss it at all, but I think we give it way to much of a place in our minds. Here is what we need to know about the end of time: It is going to happen, you won't be able to miss it, Jesus is coming back, He will defeat evil for all time, and the Christians will live with Him in heaven forever.

That's what we need to know. I think we waste way too much of our time trying to figure out what the signs will be, who the antichrist is going to be, and when Jesus is coming back. I mean seriously, Jesus Himself said that He doesn't know when that is going to happen! Do we reply think we are going to figure it out? Sounds pretty arrogant to me. Paul tells the Thessalonians something that I think we would do well to remember as well:

So, brothers and sisters, all you need to do now is stand firm and hold tight to the line of teachings we have passed on to you, whether in person or in a letter.

We need to follow the teachings of Jesus, and the other stuff will take care of itself. When you stop and think about it, it really isn't that complicated. We are asked to follow Jesus. That is what wake should devote our lives to, that is what we should be talking about. The question isn't: 'When is Jesus coming back?' The question is: 'How do I follow Him until He does come back?'

Enjoy the Journey
